A Recent Trip through the Western Desert
“A Culture That Matters”
This series arose from a profound interest in the outback, where harsh conditions shape the landscape and its people.
My journey in August 2025 through the western desert country west of Alice Springs was focussed on the incredible Mt. Wedge.
From Alice Springs to Tilmouth Well Roadhouse and thence to Newhaven Sanctuary, an Australian Wildlife Conservatory property. Then to Central Mount Wedge where we camped to capture the sense of mountain at sunset and sunrise. Next it was a long trip to Papunya through some picturesque country which we used as a base to explore Mount Liebig before heading around the eastern flank of Haast’s Bluff and into the Ikuntji community.

Mount Liebig
“A Mountain of Mystery”
Watiyawanu
Set in an imposing range where the mountains seemed to change colour depending upon the time day. It is steep and rugged, you can understand why artists from Hermannsburg and Papunya were be inspired by this mountain, its story, its cultural significance and its shear majesty.
Mount Liebig featured strongly in the stories of Lasseter and the search for the fabled reef.

Haast’s Bluff
“The Guardian Angel”
Haast’s Bluff rises like a sentinel, guarding and guiding the traveller through country around Ikuntji. You can understand why local artists Ikuntji, Papunya from Hermannsburg would be inspired by this mountain, telling its’ story of cultural significance and shear majesty.

Mount Wedge
“A wedge of mystery”
Central Mount Wedge captures the quintessential character of the western desert. It is a striking mountain rising out from the surrounding flat plains, wedge-like. It features the typical pink and purple hues and sets a background behind the mulga trees, a casuarina forest, a salt lake, or rich red desert sand that also dominate the country.
“Arkaroola – Landscapes That Matter”
I spent some time earlier this year in my favourite landscape wandering through the rock holes, looking for any remnant water and any accompanying reflections, searching for inspiration. I am really pleased to bring this series of three paintings that bring an authentic expression of Arkaroola. There is a challenge within the landscape that reveals the robustness needed to survive the long dry periods.

“Bararranna Hill, Arkaroola”
90 cm high by 60 cm wide,
oil on stretched canvas,
$2500.00
Bararranna Waterhole is a strenuous walk from Stubbs Waterhole. On the way one comes across a lovely waterhole at a creek junction at the foot of Bararranna Hill. This year there was little water for the reflections, so instead my attention turned to the layers of rock on the side of Bararranna Hill. Here is a ruggedness of Arkaroola that we can gaze at with awe.

“Mara Murumuru Waterhole “
90 cm high by 60 cm wide,
oil on stretched canvas,
$2500.00
If you care to walk from Stubbs Waterhole, along Arkaroola Creek, towards the Tillite Gorge you will come to Mara Murumuru Waterhole, some 45 minutes walk along the creek. This year there no water, but a couple of years ago one morning as I turned around at about 10am I was taken by the background gorge being lit up by the morning sun. It was such stunning glow that I have aspired to capture that moment of sparkle in a painting.

“Bolla Bollana Waterhole”
90 cm high by 60 cm wide,
oil on stretched canvas,
$2000.00
I came across this small brackish remnant waterhole with 3 different distances of the reflections. Not an easy task, but I feel we have captured to essence.
